Espalier Apple Trees

Produce at the grocery store can be less than appetizing. Sometimes the apples are brown, and they look like they’ve been sitting out for quite some time. Plus, the apples have most likely been waxed to look pretty, but who really wants to eat carnuba wax? Instead of wasting your time at the grocery store or hunting for a local apple orchard, grow espalier apple trees in your backyard.
An espalier apple tree is more than just a fruit producer. It can serve as a wall or fence to separate your neighbor’s yard from your own. It can also provide some shade, or you can guide it to grow up the side of your house for decoration. The fruit is delicious and convenient, but the tree is multi-functional.
The tree will need to be pruned on a regular basis, so in the beginning stages, it will take up the majority of your gardening time. However, the end results make your hard work and patience worthwhile. Below are some tips to make your espalier apple tree successful.
Before you go planting any old apple tree, you need to make sure that it’s spur-bearing. This means that the tree’s fruit will grow close on its branches. In order for the tree to produce that delicious fruit, you will need to plant at least two trees so that cross-pollination can occur. To make the growth process easier, choose young apple trees so you can guide the branches and nurture the tree from the beginning. To prevent diseases that could kill your tree, cut at least a ¼ inch line above the buds at a 45-degree angle. This will help the water run off easier.
An espalier apple tree is a fruitful addition to your home, because it can be a beautiful border and miniature apple orchard.
