Starting Good Habits: Compost & Recycle

August 4, 2010 – 2:15 pm by MarinaHanes

Why is it that the simplest habits that you know are good for your household and the environment can seem to be the hardest ones to begin? For example, composting and recycling aren’t really that difficult, but there are still those out there who haven’t yet started participating in these eco-friendly activities. If you’re one of those people out there, don’t be ashamed or embarrassed, no one is perfect. However, today is the day to get your act together.

First, you need to choose a day when you’re not so busy, maybe on a slow weekend. On the day that you’re embarking on this lifestyle transition, you need to reach the following goals:

  • Determine where you want to put the compost and recycling bin. It should be a functional and convenient spot where a couple bins can fit.
  • Create a compost and recycling station for you, your family and guests. For example, you might want a compost bin in your kitchen and recycling containers in the garage. It’s best if you can construct compost bin with material you have on hand, but you can purchase ones especially made for indoor use. Most likely your recycling service will provide you with a bin, but you can use reusable canvas bags too.
  • Discuss the changes with your family so everyone understands how to cooperate. If you live alone, reflect on what you’re trying to accomplish. In both bases, make sure you and everyone else knows the benefits and why putting in the extra effort is worth it.
  • Start practicing. You might have to write out reminders to yourself, but you should compost food scraps after meals and recycle pop cans when you’re finished drinking. After you maintain these habits for a week or two, it will become second nature.

Once you accomplish the goals above, you will be on your way to making a difference in your world and the environment around you.
