Celebrate Earth Day Every Day
April 16, 2010 – 9:36 am by MarinaHanes
April 22 is the 40th annual Earth Day. Since the 70s when Earth Day began, environmental legislation and protection on the government level has significantly changed for the better. Fortunately, efforts to continue preservation and conservation are continuing. So how are you going to celebrate this special day?
We should honor the earth every day, but especially on April 22. On Sunday, April 25, the Earth Day Network will be having a climate rally in Washington, D.C. to support the climate bill and encourage Congress to pass it. Not only would this bill put restrictions on carbon emissions, it would also provide jobs U.S. citizens and direct the nation into a more sustainable future. However, if you can’t attend this rally, there are so many other ways to get involved.
First, look into your local organizations such as your parks and recreational centers to see if they’re holding anything for this event. Maybe there is a litter cleanup scheduled or a fun educational workshop that you can take your family to. Even if there isn’t anything already planned in your community, you can organize a group and clean up a polluted area.
Another way to get involved is to make a promise to Mother Earth right here and now. From now on what can you do to reduce your impact on the environment? Maybe you can vow to grow backyard vegetables or find natural alternatives to pest control. If you’re already employing ways of living off of the grid, think about how you can improve these efforts. There are always ways to improve.
If you have children, make this Earth Day memorable so that they look forward to it every year and become excited about preserving the planet. You can work on saving energy and water or experiment with a new eco-friendly method such as hydroponic gardening. What do you think you will do this year and all throughout the year to celebrate the environment?
