Labor Day Festivities

Are you enjoying your day of work? Fortunately, this is more of a relaxing holiday. You could stay in pajamas all day and sleep in, or you might decide to host or join a barbecue. Other options include bargain shopping and doing last minute back-to-school shopping. Since the Autumnal Equinox will be in a couple of weeks, this could be your last free day to enjoy what is left of summer. You better make this day enjoyable and eco-friendly!
If you’re deciding to host a barbecue, use washable plates, glasses and silverware instead of disposable dinnerware. In the case that you’re having more guests than you have plates, at least purchase compostable or recyclable tableware. This type of dinnerware is something you can bring along if you’re attending a friend’s barbecue. Also use a gas grill if you can, because charcoal emits more pollution. Plus, gas is cheaper to use and cooks the food more evenly.
When you have friends over, you also have to manage their waste. Set out well-marked garbage containers for recyclables. This way these used products can be turned into something new without the use of virgin materials. It’s also beneficial to encourage guests to walk, bike or carpool to your home. Make arrangements for your friends to pick each other up.
Whether you’re hosting or attending, buy food items in bulk. This can actually save you money too, and the food is not packaged as much. That packaging waste adds up, but the bulk items have less plastic and paper waste. Also, don’t forget to use your garden vegetables in your dishes.
Maybe bargain or school shopping is more your style on Labor Day. So pack up the kids and take their friends along too. Have the friend’s parents make a list of the things they need that way everyone with you will get their school shopping done. If you’re just bargain shopping, don’t forget to invite your friends along because then you can ride together and split the costs of gas and the turnpike fees.
Labor Day is what you make of it, and it’s your day off from work so do what you want. However, keep these eco-friendly tips in mind so you can limit your pollution and waste.
