The Great Lakes has had a terrible time with invasive species, especially Lake Erie. Over the years, there have been many different invasive species that have caused issues for Lake Erie, including zebra muscles. When these non-native species start growing or reproducing in an area where they’re not normally found, it creates more competition for the native species. In some cases, the invasive plants or animals can wipe out the native ones, which can alter the balance of the ecosystem. However, by being conscious of this issue, you can prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.
Summer is the season for water sports and recreational activities. But if you’re going boating, it’s important that you don’t take species from one lake or river into another one. To prevent this from happening, it’s essential that you thoroughly clean down your boat before you take it to a different location.
Although it might be common knowledge, it’s not okay to take fish or other species from your trip and release it into your local water supply or backyard when you return home. This is something you might have to watch with your children, because they might find a turtle or snake and want to take it home. This can cause problems for local wildlife and plants, because the native species can become overrun by invasive species.
There are accounts of invasive species all over the world, and they wreak havoc on native wildlife and plants. Remediating these situations is challenging, because once the species have adapted to the area and begin to flourish, it’s almost impossible to remove them all. But with a conscious effort, we can prevent these circumstances from happening.
