Natural Health Prevention: Easy Ways to Keep Colds at Bay

Managing your stress is sometimes key in preventing colds from coming on. When stress builds up in your body, you might experience tension in your shoulders or another area in your back, and you might also have a loss of focus or creativity. There are so many ways that stress can affect you, and after a while, it takes a toll on your immune system. Of course, you can pick up illnesses from someone else, or your body could just be more susceptible. However, the best way to prevent yourself from getting a nasty cold is to take part in natural and preventative maintenance.

When you feel as though your world is crashing down, and you can’t possibly get everything you want done, it’s important to take a step back and enjoy some time to yourself. Giving yourself a gentle massage on the legs, arms and neck can release some toxins and increase circulation. If you don’t have time for that, at least do some breathing exercises—ever notice how your breathing becomes shallow when you’re nervous or worried?

Another way to prevent yourself from catching a cold that is going around is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. It also won’t hurt to increase your vitamin C intake by eating oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, mangoes, cantaloupes, etc. If you’re on the go, take a reusable water bottle with water and some lemon or lime juice in it. It’s best to get this vitamin straight from the source instead of a supplement so that your body has a higher percentage of absorption.

Incorporating salt into some bath time rituals is also beneficial. Using a netty pot with some warm salt water will keep germs and debris from building up in your nose, and if you do have a slight infection, it might wipe it out before it turns into a full blown sinus infection. Taking baths is not only a great way to relax, but by putting some Epsom salt in the warm water, you can release some toxins from your body.

Staying on top of your health in a natural way can decrease your reliance on antibiotics and other medications. However, in the case that you do become ill, it’s best to seek a doctor’s advice. But when you know a cold is going around or you feel as though your immune system might be down for whatever reason, be conscious of how you treat your body and what you put into it.
