800px-Nice_Cup_of_TeaIt’s easy for your energy level to take a hit during the winter season. The dreary, cold days and dark afternoons put you in the mood to lounge around in our pajamas. Instead of letting Jack Frost get you down, start yourself on a therapeutic tea regimen.

Tea is rich in antioxidants, which make your body less susceptible to those damaging free radicals. In addition, some studies suggest that tea can reduce your risk of certain diseases and health conditions such as cancer and osteoporosis. By cultivating your own herbal tea garden, you will be well on your way to creating healthy drinks to get you through the winter.

Green tea has several benefits, one of which is supporting your immune system. If you’re constantly fighting seasonal colds, add this to your cold care arsenal. When you have sinus headaches or a sore throat, it’s hard to stay motivated, which is why you need to load up on vitamins C and E. You can also customize a eucalyptus or mint tea, which will relieve your sinuses and perk you up with a strong aroma.

Once you figure out the types of herbs you prefer in your tea, you can personalize your morning, afternoon and evening teas to meet your needs. For example, spearmint would be a minty way to wake up, lemon balm would be a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up, and lavender would be the perfect way to end your evening.

Growing these herbs in your backyard will ensure that your teas are organically grown and free of chemicals. Plus, it will be fun to experiment with a combination of herbs and others that you’re not as familiar with such as thyme, German chamomile and pineapple mint. Then you can label and store your teas so you have some ready for next winter.
