Sustainable Experiment: Human Breast Milk Cheese

How far would you go in the name of sustainability? Currently, a New York City chef Daniel Angerer has been in the news for making cheese from his wife’s excess breast milk. When you consider the fact that human’s drink cow’s milk, is it really strange for human breast milk cheese to be a natural alternative?
After Angerer posted a blog about his human breast milk cheese making experiment, there was controversy over it that caused rumors, which quickly got out of control. The New York Health Department verified that the rumors about Angerer selling and storing the cheese in his restaurant were false. However, legendary critic Gael Greene did get the opportunity to taste the human breast milk cheese, and she also wrote up a review about it on The Daily Beast.
Also on Angerer’s blog, you can find detailed instructions on how to make human breast milk cheese. So if you or your significant other is lactating, you can try making this cheese at home.
Cow’s, sheep’s and goat’s milk isn’t a sustainable option, but human milk is more natural. However, milk is species specific and designed to nourish babies, not necessarily adults. Human breast milk cheese might never become mainstream, but it’s an experiment you can do at home.
