christmas_nikon_scenes_304_lAre you the neighbor that has to have the brightest house in the neighborhood during the holidays? Do you spend hours making sure the lights flatter your house and are working properly? If so, consider some eco-friendly alternatives to help the environment and save you money on your electric bill.

Although the holidays are supposed to be bright and cheery, there is a line between a warm touch of light and a shock of brightly lit displays. This year make your house look elegant rather than gaudy and remember that simple light displays can be classic and eye catching. So before you start hooking up the lights and stringing them on every part of your home’s exterior, plan on making a statement by doing less. Plus, who wants to be outside in the cold for hours testing the lights and arranging them?

For those of you who are going to do Christmas big this year no matter what, make sure to buy LED lights. These lights can be found at almost any major shopping store, so being unable to find them is not an excuse. In comparison to traditional lights, LED lights use 90 percent less electricity. Not only is this beneficial for the environment, it’s also going to keep some money in your bank account.

When it comes to the inside of your home, use candles for a more personal touch. Before guests come over, light them to add some elegance to your dinner table as well as a spicy holiday aroma. Soy lotion candles are a great alternative, because they tend to burn at a lower temperature and you can use the pool of melted wax as hand lotion. Plus, in comparison to traditional candles, they burn longer and have a fuller scent.

If you decide to add some lighting fixtures to your home for Christmas, look for products made from material that can be recycled. For example, copper light fixtures and glass and aluminum fixtures can be recycled. Also, look on the packaging to find out if the fixtures have been made from recycled copper, glass or aluminum.

Try to have some restraint this Christmas when it comes to lighting up your home, but if you can’t seem to resist, make sure to look for eco-friendly lighting.
