The Mess in the Gulf: How Can You Help?

The news boards have been buzzing over British Petroleum’s (BP) oil spill, which occurred about two months ago in the Gulf Coast. While it’s uncertain how this mess will be remediated and how long we will see the consequences from it, it’s important that consumers begin to do their part to prevent this from happening again. So how can you help even if you don’t live near the Gulf?
Although BP is the culprit in this situation, and the company has a track record of disregarding basic safety and environmental concerns, it’s important to reflect on our part in all of this. Because of our need and high demand for oil, offshore drilling has and will possibly continue to be a way for us to extract oil from the earth. So one of the best ways to help prevent further spills is to rely more on alternative forms of energy such as solar and wind and to also reduce your traveling or at least purchase hybrids. Living off of the grid is easier said than done, but you can at least set goals for yourself to get your household on the right track.
Now, if you leave near the area, the above suggestions definitely apply, but you can also can volunteer your time. Until the underwater well is permanently taken care of, the locals will continuously need assistance to prevent oil from infiltrating the beaches and wetlands. Even donating money to reputable organizations can help with containment booms and even supplies for oiled birds and other wildlife.
This oil spill proves how dangerous and unpredictable offshore drilling can be, which gives the world more of a reason to transition to alternative forms of energy. For the sake of the Gulf and what’s remaining of our beautiful oceans, it’s imperative that we, as individuals, take as much action as we possibly can.
