Why Should You Save Your Own Seeds?

Do you buy new seeds every year for your vegetable garden? Why do you do that when you can gather the seeds from your existing plants? In order to grow a fruitful harvest, it’s important to grow plants with hardy genes, but you don’t have to purchase seeds from a nursery to grow a successful garden. There are so many reasons to save your own seeds and saving money is just one of the benefits.
Instead of putting money into seed packets, you can gather the seeds from your current garden. Although seed packets aren’t that expensive, when you’re buying a bunch of them for a large garden, the costs add up. Plus, you can’t guarantee that the seeds will grow into strong fruitful plants. Then you can use the money you saved for something else you’re really in need of.
Because you will end up with so many extra seeds, you will be able to generously plant them in your garden. You can simply sow a thin layer of them right into the soil and not have to worry about potting and transplanting the plants later. Gardening is less of a hassle when you can throw down the seeds and see what happens.
Another plus to planting your own seeds is that you will breed a variety of plants that are more suited to your climate, soil and gardening technique. Think about it…if you grow an amazing tomato plant one year, it probably has more refined genes in comparison to the other tomato plants that didn’t do so well. By keeping seeds from this particular tomato plant, you increase your chances of having other successful tomato plants. So you definitely should save the seeds from the plants that excel.
Now don’t you wish you had saved some seeds from last year’s crop?
